William Montague Charles Gummow sits on the Hong Kong Court of Final Appeal as a Non-Permanent Judge from another common law jurisdiction, a position he has held since his appointment on 8 April 2013. Before his Hong Kong appointment, he was admitted as a solicitor in 1966, became a partner of his firm in 1969, was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1986, and was subsequently elevated to the Federal Court of Australia in 1986 and to the High Court of Australia in April 1995. He was appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia in 1997 and awarded the Centenary Medal in 2001. He studied at the University of Sydney, graduating Bachelor of Arts and Master of Laws with first-class honours, later received an honorary doctorate in law from that university, and has taught at the Australian National University College of Law in constitutional, equity, conflict of laws and refugee law.
